This is the key-in-the-ignition test:
\012Locate your check engine light on your dash/cluster. When you initially turn the key on (but not starting the car>) does this light up, and show "power limited" "power Loss" or "check engine" ? If so, proceed to the next step. If not, pull the cluster out of the dash, and replace lights in the dash accordingly.
\012With the CEL (check engine light/power limited light) known good, and illuminated, shut the car off.
\012Now turn the key to the "on" position (not start) and then turn it back one click to "off" (but not lock - the position where you can remove your key)
\012Then turn it back on, then off. Then turn it on, and leave it on. You need to do this on-off-on-off-on procedure within 5 seconds of the initial key "on". This is referred to as the "key dance" or "Checking for Codes"
\012Now once turned "on" for the 3rd time (the last step in the dance) the check engine light should be illuminated. It will take a few seconds, then shut off.
\012Keep watching it, and eventually it will start flashing (the speed of flashing is variant on thevehicle>, I have found some are faster/slower at these flashes than others)
\012As soon as it flashes, you will notice it will flash, maybe pause, then flash again. The number of flashes it flashes on the CEL is how you retrieve codes. It will always flash in quicker sucession for the first digit, make a pause, then flash again for the second digit.
\012All codes are double digits, remember this.
\012Say for instance, you disconnect the battery, reconnect it, and then try to retrieve codes before you crank the car. This will show a code "11" which is "no crank signal after loss of battery power" So that code would show up like this -
\012(after the initial CEL illumination, and shutoff) pause - flash - pause - flash (pause - 1 - pause - 1)
\012Same for other codes. a 23 will look like this - pause - flash-flash - pause - flash-flash-flash - pause
If you have an obd reader, there is a wire under the hood on the passenger side where obd connector can be plugged
