24Z nissan engine, it should have some colored links as in silver , one will match the cam mark wich is a three hole gear the pin on the cam will go through the number two hole on the gear and the colored link will set on the number two dot on the gear, then the second colored link will go on the crank gear dot. But if you are talking about a z24 with dohc yiu will have to stick a bolt back in the hole of the cam gears into the block to hold them in place while you set the crank gear and put the chain on it when you have it aligned, but if it does not start after several tries you may have warped the. Valves.
I'm showing the first Cavalier Z24 being sold in 1988 with a 2.8 engine.
I'm not sure what you mean by marks, normally you would like up the marks on the crank pulley and turn the distributor to the point where the rotor is pointing to the number one cylinder plug wire.
If the distributor has been out of the engine, you will be on or 180 degrees off.
Once you get the engine started, you would use a timing light to set base timing.
