\015 I have a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with a 2.5l 4 cylinder. The alternator belt keeps snapping. Will work for a few hundred miles and then I look down, charge light is on and belt has snapped. Any help would be appreciated. Hope I'm not the only one with this problem. Thanks\015
Remove the belt from any pulley. Go from pulley to pulley and make sure they are all free wheeling obviously you won't be able to turn the crank pulley. Spin your alternator pulley and listen to it. It should be silent and smoothe. If you hear any bearing noise from the tensioner, the alternator, the AC comppresor, I would do this soon, you've spent on belts what an alternator would cost. Also check the idler pulley if this is a serpentine type belt.
Something in the belt drive assembly is either out of alignment or locking up. These two problems will cause premature belt wear. For the alignment issue, try taking a yard stick or flat edge of some sort and placing it across the front edge of the pulleys. If there is a large difference in spacing that could be the problem. If you have a pulley bearing goin out or lockin up somewhere along the belt line this too will cause a premature belt wear. Do you sometimes smell burning rubber???
