\015 Hi ; i recently had the rear brakes repaired, the mechanic said I need to replace the rear axle seals & bearings as the oil from the transfer case is leaking & thus degrading the brake pads..can you help with instruction a diagram & instructions to make this repair at home or should I just bring it back to the garage & pay him the $900 + dollars hes has quoted me\015
Good news mate! You don't have to touch the bearings at all !!! Just replace the seals, highly unlikely the bearings are toast, had the very same problem and advice from local repairer but another (honest) mechanic suggested to change the seals only and it worked.Remove old seals using a large flat bladed screwdriver taking EXTREME CARE not to scratch the housing, tricky bit is to replace the seals as they have to go in SQUARE to the housing, use a large socket if available or a flat piece of steel to rest against the seal and hammer in SLOWLY AND CAREFUL, ALWAYS SQUARE ! to the housing, take your time and do it a bit at a time, the further in you go the easier it gets, make a note of the final position of the old seal before removal, do a sketch or take a photograph, also take care when reinserting the prop shaft back in the axle housing not to damage the new seal. Good luck !!!
