Having problems with your 1987 Ford F 150 ?

1987 fuel level guage issue

\015 I have a 1987 F150 XLT Lariet, dual tanks, 19gal in front 17 in rear, one fuel gauge an a rocker switch to flip between tanks. when it is set on the front tank, it pegs out beyond full, when its almost empty. when i flip to rear, it just shows that the tank is empty. i would like to know what to replace, sending unit, guage, bad wire? and if i replace the guage i need to know what "ohms" gauge to use, some say 90ohms full 0 ohms empty, an is my guage eletrical or mechanical please thank you\015\012\015\012kevin\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 03-10-2022

Answers :

Thats funny, my 87 F250 does the same thing. At 80 bucks a sender unit I have learned to live with it even tho this is what I do for a living.

\015\012The reason fuel gauges fail is because of sulfur in fuels.

\015\012Do a search on sulfur and fuel sender units failures and you will find your complaint is the same as the masses.
You need not worry aboutt the guages ohmage for this is all explained in the VIN. The parts store will know exactly what you need. However, it appears you've lost your main ground to the tanks. Your best bet is to trace the harness back and check for a good ground. This is a very popular fault of Ford trucks. Thanks, Dana
