If you have an 87 Wrangler, sometimes you have to check under 86 CJ parts. This is when Chrysler bought out AMC and some the 87's have 86 blocks with 87 emissions. Anyway, the starter drive on the starter has either a long shaft or a short shaft. The longer one will engage the flywheel but will get caught up disengaging because it is longer. This will cause it to get hung up and break the flywheel's teeth. I know this because we went through this. If you have the original starter, compare.
Drive may have been engaged when engine running, like as in accidentally forgetting it was already running, or drive was sticky & stayed engaged after start up. If this is first time it's happened, I wouldn't panic, but observe flywheel/ring gear teeth when you change starter. Check for good alignment when installing new one, just to be sure. Any odd noises from starter prior to this happening?
