Having problems with your 1987 Mazda 323 4-Door ?

I was recently given a 1987 Mazda 323. Everything seemed to be fine until one day. HAHA. My grandparents gave it to me with a full tank of gas and the gas gauge seemed to be in good working order until, I got below half a tank of gas. The dial is analog and like I said works fine until It gets below half a tank and then it just either goes up and down real slow or sits below empty. Either the float is sticking inside the tank or you have a bad ground...although some models tend to sway back and forth and all is normal
