You might have to recheck to make sure the timing marks are still aligned at the crank and cam and the distributer.it sounds like one of them is not lined up properly.can you check and adjust the timing to specs and does it run better.the rough running and not idling up is also a sign.these are things to check.
Have you double-checked the engine timing with a timing light to see whether everything came together properly? Your symptoms sound like the head might also have shifted when you slipped off the old belt or the new timing belt may have jumped a tooth when you first restarted the engine. Either way, a mismatch between the actual position of the valves and the spark sequence would cause a profound lack of power and / or symptoms like backfiring and other issues. \012
\012If your timing is way off, the right way to fix things would be to take the belt off again and move the head one gear forward or back from where it was. I would recommend against using the timing advance/****** of the distributor to try to reduce these symptoms until you got your primary timing issues resolved. Right now, you probably haven't damaged anything in your valve train, but extended operation with the engine not in sync with itself will put significant strain on some of the components.
