Front wheel drive cars with transaxles use a shifter cable that runs from the shifter to the transaxle. Have a look under the hood and see if the cable broke loose from the linkages, or from the shifter itself.

The older mk2 and mk3 transmissions use a few rods that hinge back and forth on the gearbox u have a bad or bent rod or bushing. www.usrallyteam.com has complete rebuild kits for 150.00 or bushing kits that are cheap suggest looking at that.
