Having problems with your 1989 Ford Ranger ?

Why won't my 1989 Ford Ranger stay running, it spits and sputters when I feather the gas pedal? Changed fuel pump didn't help As I was driving it would shut off then maybe hours later or next day it would run again and maybe wouldn't happen again for a week or so
