Having problems with your 1989 Jeep Cherokee ?

USED MOPAR ENGINE SEALANT, BUT VALVE COVER IS STILL LEAKING

\015 I CLEANED THE VALVE COVER, WAITED UNTIL IT DRIED, APPLIED THE SEALANT ON THE VALVER COVER, AND WAITED 30 MINUTES FOR IT TO DRY. I WAITED 24 HOURS BEFORE I DROVE IT, BUT THE VALVE COVER IS STILL LEAKING. I APPLIED 1/16 TO 1/8 INCHES TO ONE SIDE. \015\012SHOULD I APPLY THE SEALANT TO BOTH SIDES? SHOULD I APPLY MORE SEALANT THAN 1/16THS?\015\012\015\0121989 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT 4.0L\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 20-09-2021

You did everything correctly "by the book", but I add one thing...Once the orininal application has set up, I add another thin layer, then immediately set the cover in place on the engine can't slide it around or wipe it across anything when doing this though or it won't work. I then tighten the cover lightly, wait a couple of hours then re-tighten.Follow a pattern like torquing a cylionder head so it goes down evenly.
On yours, did you try just tightening up on it a bit?
If you use a gasket with the sealant, and follow the same steps you outlined, you will not leak unless your valve cover is warped so bad that it needs to be replaced. I know mopar people who insist that the mopar sealants are 100 percent reliable. In my experience, it is bogus as a stand alone. It's like trying to plug a water leak with toilet paper. That doesn't mean that the mopar sealants don't, or won't work, but in my experience, it's always been ideal to use a gasket in conjunction with the sealant. The gasket, and sealant together will assure a tight seal.
