Having problems with your 1989 Mercury Cougar ?

1989 Mercury Cougar Engine will not turnover. Jiggle stick shift most of the time car will start, very intermittent...does not happen all the time. Is there a sensor attached to the gear shift that detects when car is not in park thereby not allowing engine to start.

Answers :

There is a switch on the side of the trans called a neutral safety switch. It only allows starting in park or neutral. the switch probably needs replacing. The next time you have a problem starting, try shifting to neutral to see if it will start. To do so, leave the key in the on position, apply the e-brake and shift into neutral.
Spot on.yes there is a sensor, but if you leave it in N it dont work.
