Please read all the way through before proceeding so you do not miss a step!!!
\015\012PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valves usually feed back to your air filter box. If you are finding oil in there, this is probably the problem....usually if you are losing that much oil, you will find at least one oil stain on your air filter.
\015\012PCV valves are easily replacable, and fairly inexpensive, but most times they can be "bench cleaned" with carb cleaning spray. Find the large tube that leads from your air cleaner to the crankcase. Most cars fit the PCV valve on the crankcase, but some put it on the air cleaner end. It will either simply press into a rubber gasket on one end (and the hose on the other), or it may thread into the crankcase (I have never found one threaded into the air cleaner box).
\015\012Once you locate it, pull it out and shake it. If it rattles, it is probably cleanable (it is basically a tube with a ball inside). You can liberally spray carb cleaner into one end, hold your fingers over the ends, shake it back and forth, drain it, then repeat on the other end.... please be aware that it is a messy job! Have some rags handy and keep it away from your face and body! Do this a few times until you no longer get any black "gunk" coming out of it. If after you clean it, you can hear the ball happily rattling back and forth when you shake it, your PCV valve is probably OK to put back in.
\015\012If it does not rattle, or if you just want to completely eliminate it from your problem list, purchase a replacement and put it in. All good auto parts stores carry them. Make sure it is pointed the same way as the one you take out....most of the unthreaded ones have a raised ridge on one end or at least an arrow or line.
\015\012Before you run out to get a replacement or to buy some carb cleaner, make sure you put the bad/dirty PCV back the way it came out. Your engine will run terrible without it installed!
\015\012Good luck!
The PCV valve focuses on crankcase vapors and not oil consumption... A worn engine, for example, would have excessive crankcase pressures and oil gets blown into the PCV system and filter, usually connected to the air filter......
