Having problems with your 1991 Ford Ranger Supercab ?

1991 Ford Ranger STX 3.0l V6 Automatic Transmission I was driving today, and I stopped at a stop sign. I let off the brake, and pushed the gas, and there was a clunking sound, and the truck started to drift backwards. The engine runs fine, and the shift linkage is operational. What could the problem be? Also, Could too much transmission fluid cause it to not engage in any gears? Please Help!
