Well, it's really hard to tell what going on without actually seeing it, so you need to be the eyes here and I'll just name off some things that can cause irratic operation. (I'll go from least to most expensive)
\015\012Vacuum leaks is a yes. Check mounting bolts at the intake manifold for tightness. Make sure all vacuum hoses are connected and in good condition, look for dry rot or breaks.
\015\012It may need a tune up if you haven't done this in a while, make sure you set the spark plug gap correctly... which is .045' (models equiped with ECM System) .035' for all others .
\015\012This tune up would include plugs, rotor bug, distribitor cap and wires. For the price, you may want to replace the Coil Assembly, fuel and air filters also. Run a few bottles of injector cleaner through the gas tank and a bottle of "HEET" to remove any moisture and debriese.
\015\012I suggest you run the ECM (Electronic Control Module) in diagnostic mode to see if there are any codes stored. Use a Haynes Repair Manual to guide you through troubleshooting and repairs if needed. (Available at your local Auto Parts Store).
\015\012The Valve Settings and engine timing play a role in how the motor performs under stresses such as temperature and driving conditions. If the motor has alot of miles on it, wear and tear requires you may need resetting valve clearence lash and maybe replacing the timing chain and gear assembly.
\015\012(It's always lots easier to replace the timing chain and gear "before" it goes out completely)
\015\012Ok, guess the rest is up to you. I hope this helps, good luck!
