Having problems with your 1993 Ford Explorer Limited ?

Starter problem When we turn off the key, and remove it from the ignition, it doesn't disengage. We found this out after my husband replaced the starter and celenoid after both were burned out. When he reconnected the starter, the engine tried to turn over. Now we have to keep it disconnected, place the key in, turn it on, open the hood and the engine starts. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?
