I take it its a standard? if it is then the gear linkage or clutch needs checking out. In the mean time, double dip the accelerator as you try to change gear (if its standard) i drove for 3 month with a burnt out clutch.
Sounds like a clutch problem, more than likely a worn bush, wich should be found on the clutch cable under the bonnet, it is a rubber ring wich smooths shifts. if the bush seems okay then you more than likely have a 'stick' than a 'slip'. clutch problem. this means your clutch is having trouble disconnecting from the fly wheel. however dont rule out a 'slip'. whatever the problem is i suggest replacing the clutch as it is obviously quite a serious problem.
