1991 Jaguar XJ6 Soverign 4.0 Water in the engine oil
\015 I bought this car from an elderly couple for a steal. I was told the head gasket was blown as there is water in the oil. I changed the oil put in new plugs, took it down and it passed its smog test easily. I began to tear down the engine and after removing the intake manifold I noticed alot of water and coolant in the rubber coupling between the throttle body and mass air flow meter. Could this water and coolant have been coming from the "Part Throttle Orfice Control Housing" as small water lines do connect to it and it sits above the throttle valve attached to the intake plenum? If so would that be enough water to get into the oil? Are there any other areas I can check out that water may infiltrate the oil without being the head gasket, (timing cover to water pump sealing surfaces etc)? I don't mind continuing on with the the removal of the head gasket but obviously would like to avoid it if at all possible if that is not the cause. I am contimplating blocking all of the water openings on the engine block and head and pressurizing the block and head to the recommend operating pressure and see if it holds this should rule out any leaking hoses or leak in the expansion tank. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?????\015
Get engine warm and do a compression test. This easily eliminates head gasket. Head gasket is a biggish job and time wasted if it is not the problem. Part throttle breather unlikely as this is a vacuum applied to the cam cover, so water is unlikely to get in there as the air is coming out of the engine. But, if water is in the inlet manifold, could it be the inlet manifold to head gasket? I can't remember for sure, but I think this is water heated? If so, that is probably your culprit. If not, it sounds like a top end water leak and unlikely to be head gasket, head gasket leaks nearly always show up as steam out of the exhaust - "white smoke". Hope this helps.
