Having problems with your 1993 Saturn SL2 ?

1994 Saturn SL2 stuck in 3rd gear.

\015 I have a 1994 Saturn SL2 that seems like the tranny is stuck in 3rd gear. Take off is very/VERY slow, engine needs to be floored to get anywhere. Around 30-40mph it will shift up, but under deceleration it only shifts down once as well. Very seldomly there is a **** like the transmission is slipping but no RPM increase or engine. I was in the car when the problem happened, under normal driving conditions, came to a stop at a light with no problems, and took off very slowly. Havent dropped the transmisson pan yet to see if theres any shavings since its the dead of winter, BUT transmission fluid levels were and have been fine for over 2 weeks. I know theres many different things this could be but maybe somebody has experienced something similar.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 14-01-2019

If the torque converter was locked up as snafu86 said, then you would be stalling when you stopped.

The Saturn TAAT Transmission will place itself in hydraulic backup mode when there is a mechanical issue with the transmission. This hydraulic backup mode consists of placing itself in 3rd gear and staying there. This is to prevent any damage to it. It is possible you have a bad clutch pack or another internal problem.

There is no "pan" or "side pan". The Saturn transmission isn't like any other, for one there is an external filter on it unlike most if not all other transmissions. There is simply a drain plug on the bottom and the valve body is on the top under the valve body pan.

Time to get the transmission looked at. It could be internal and not the usual valve body fix scenario.
There might be a torque converter lock up sensor or solenoid. When it quits working you have a problem like your having. Some times the side pan can be removed and solenoid can be replaced. I have never replaced one in a saturn, but I have in a chevy cavalier. I'm not sure but I think that is a GM made transmission.
