Popping Sound in Steering Gear - 94 F150

\015 Hi,\015\012\015\012I have a 94 F150 that has developed a sharp metallic knock or popping sound\015\012 that is coming from the steering gear. The truck has power steering with 72k\015\012 miles on the truck. The sound occurs when turning the steering wheel back and\015\012 forth at slow speeds or when stopped and happens at no particular point in the\015\012 travel. It is very loud. Loud enough to be heard outside the truck or inside\015\012 the cab.\015\012\015\012I've flushed out the old fluid and replaced it with Havoline Type F fluid\015\012 which had no effect. The mesh adjustment seems to have no effect on it. I've\015\012 checked the gear mounting bolts and the rubber steering shaft coupler both of\015\012 which were tight. The Pitman arm is tight also.\015\012\015\012Any ideas what could be wrong with the gear?\015\012\015\012Thanks,\015\012\015\012Russ Hunter\015\0121994 ford explorer 4X4 knocks and pops when turning/sounds and feels like LF will come off (at speed I mean !!!) Any ideas more on this? THX\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 30-11-2020

Answers :

I would check the front axle joints the get dry and stick
This is a guess but the inner tie rod and tie rod end (you have one of each on each side of the truck), wear out and make a loud clunk, mostly when changing direction, but also on starting & stopping. ABout a $200 repair including a front end alignment.
