Having problems with your 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee ?

We just bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee (94) and put a little gas in it. It run fine to take our kids fishing but when we went to go home, it wouldn't start. It will run a little bit and then dies. It is like it is not getting any fuel. My brother can hear the fuel pump kick on and off and I put a new filter on it but, that didn't help. Could it be the map sensor? Also what is a map sensor, and what is the purpose? I am a woman and don't know anything about cars and am learning. Someone please help

We had a similar problem and it turned out to be the plug to the coil. I found out by accident while looking under the hood and bumping the wire to the coil.

\015\012It was intermittant (sp) and every time I would wiggle the wire it would stop the engine. Jeep said they would have to replace the wiring harness at considerable expense! I pulled the plug apart that connected to the coil and replaced the litlle pins (Ford style worked) in the plug (a tedious job) and it has never given me any further problems.

The complex computer controls in these vehicles is really a bad place to begin learning about your car. To start with, you will need to do a basic computer scan to retrieve any codes, then translate the codes into something meaningful. However, the codes do not tell you exactly what's wrong, only an area to test. The most common item to fail and give the symptoms are the fuel system (which you already pretty much looked at) and the crank position sensor on the bellhousing about 10/11 o'clock on the drivers side, looking from the back. But, it is not inexpensive and is a pain to get to so do not, change it without testing first. I believe yours should show an open circuit when tested with an ohmeter at the b&c terminals of the connector if it is good.
If you are going to be doing a lot of your own work, I suggest you buy a chiltons or haynes manual...except for their wiring diagrams (which are abysmal), it can help you a lot.
