Safe to say that it is destroyed. If you remove the cap you will probably see oil has leaked in causing this short. Replace the unit and you should be fine. The new one will come with new seals already installed. It wouldn't hurt to get a new cap and rotor if you can afford after the distributor. They will run a little over $220 from Autozone. Don't wory about timing, the shaft has an offset that will not allow you to install it 180 deg out. Let me klnow if you need anything else.
On this model the ignition control module is part of the distributor assembly and they must be replaced as a unit, that is what was smoking, The distributor is listed below. when u remove it make sure u install the rebuilt just like the old one with the distributor rotor pointed to the same cylinder position, it is a very easy job.
