Having problems with your 1995 Toyota 4Runner ?

I have a new problem. Every morning it is taking more and more turns-over with the key for the starter to catch. It always has so far.. but it is getting colder and more difficult. Can I hit the starter with a hammer like in the old days do dislodge the starter and help it along to going ahead and cranking up ? Also, what is fair price for new starter and install ? Thanks a million. I read this site 2 or 3 times a month for hours.
