Having problems with your 1996 Honda Civic ?

My honda civic lxi '97 got overheat last wednesday. HELP!

\015 It blew smoke and it was hot. I waited for few minutes and put water. I wend to a shop and they replaced the fan coz they told me that it was not functioning. On thursday, i can feel that whenever I step on the accelerator and though m at gear 4, the car is still slow. Last friday friday night, the aircon blows hot air, I stopped for a while and called a technician, he told me that I need to replace the temperature sending unit / thermostat switch. On the other hand, the opinion of another technician is to clean the aircon. They cleaned the aircon, changed the filter and did other mechanical stuff yesterday. It was cold for few minutes yesterday after cleaning the aircon but everytime I change gears, the car shakes. This afternoon, I asked another technician and he told me that the hose is swollen and that I realy need to replace the thermostat switch. What should I do? Please help me coz a lady like me is not an expert on these matter. Thanks\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 27-01-2020

Some of my friends of Honda user also have the prob like you.
I was tell by other friends to change the engine oil that the brand name sort of jtX (sound something like that).

He said it really reduce the engine temperature because it have some kind of tribology technology and there was a story where his friend's car move about 4 days with the radiator fan not functional. His friend didn't know until he check his car...

I think maybe it solve a bit of your problem as precaution before your engine jam.
Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls check:
  • engine oil through the dipstick. Note the color;
  • \015\012
  • on a cold engine, remove the radiator cap. Check for the presence of an oily film floating on the water/coolant;
  • \015\012
  • with the cap still off, start & warm-up the\015\012engine. Soon as the engine has warmed up, note if the water in the\015\012radiator has risen in level and if it is flowing/moving;
  • \015\012
  • shut down and allow it to cool sufficiently;
  • \015\012
  • when the engine has cooled sufficiently, fill the radiator and the reservoir;
  • \015\012
  • replace the radiator cap;
  • \015\012
  • start the engine and allow it to run for about 5 minutes;
  • \015\012
  • while looking over the engine, have someone else turn on the A/C full;
  • \015\012
  • note if you will hear a loud clicking/clacking sound;
  • \015\012
  • note if the radiator fan is turning;
  • \015\012
  • note if the A/C is blowing cold air inside the car.
Post back results/updates. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
