Having problems with your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ?
My 96 jeep grand cherokee will cut out while driving. the vehicle doesnt sputter or lose power it just stops running. 1 time it took a few minutes to get started and the other 9 or so times it started right up. I left it with the mechanic and he found nothing. The problem happens every few weeks or so.
We had a jeep come in for the exact same issue a few weeks back. First i have to ask if your mechanic checked all the fuel possibilities. Fuel pressure and fuel volume. That is what i would check first. When we ran the standard tests and the fuel was ruled out as a possibility, we moved on. In your case it could be a couple of things, and not having the car here to look at, I will give you some ideas at what you may be looking at. The next thing i would check is the crank sensor. make sure it is getting good connections and is working order. You can test the crank sensor by doing the following: Get an OBD II scan tool that will show live data. (most autoparts store have loaners, be sure to ask for one the will show live data) Pull up the RPM reading and crank the engine over. Hold accelerator to floor to shut off fuel to the engine. No reading find the crank sensor, inspect for damage, unplug electrical connector and clean it with electrcial contact cleaner spray and then plug the connector back into the sensor. Crank the engine while watching for RPM reading, again hold down the accelerator to prevent fuel flow to the engine. If you have RPM reading now sensor is ok, engine should run.\015\012All of that tested ok on our Jeep. But what we did find was that the outboard PCM cover screw was shorting out the circuit board. Chrysler PCM p/n P56028412, s/n TEH106636023.\015\012i would not recommend you messing with the PCM yourself unless you know what you are doing, but it will be something toi have your mechanic look at.
I would think something has to be grounding out and shutting it down. Inspect all wires and cables. Be sure all are tight. Especially around and on starter. Check battery ground cable, positive battery cable. (entire cable and connections) Check all ingnition wires, power to ignition, etc. Good luck. Hope this helps.
