Having problems with your 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7 ?

When the temperatures drop below 30 degrees I cannot get my gear shift out of park until the car is fully warmed up. When depressing the button on the shift lever it does not respond until vehicle is warmed up. What might be causing this and how can I fix it?

Answers :

The most common fix is either the brake pedal switch is bad or out of adjustment. cars now days, you have to step on brake to start car, it is a safety feature so it can not start or go into gear if foot is not on brake. once the brake switch is locked, it will send current to the shift solinoid that releases the shift lock.usually its the brake switch ! have a good day !!
