Having problems with your 1997 Buick Skylark ?

While driving 65 on the freeway, my car started to smoke and make clanking noises without notice. (The sound was similar to churning pop corn roasting in a kettle). It did this for a short time and the sound seemed to move from the left side of the engine chamber to the mid section until the check engine light came on. When that happened the car then suddenly ceased up and died. We tried to start the car again only to find no luck. Prior to this earlier on in the day the car was overheating

Answers :

Sweet tailpipe smell is cooking antifreeze- either a head gasket or head- or worse- if the engine spins but doesn't start if could be as simple as a head gasket- but from what you described- i would be looking for a new car or a cheap working mechanic to change the engine
