Having problems with your 1997 Ford Explorer AWD ?

Horn stopped working

\015 The horn stopped working. At first it was just touchy and it almost had to be in a certain spot to work. Eventually it stopped working. I'm wondering if it's just the horn that needs to be replaced or if there is possibly a more advanced problem with the wiring system.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 18-03-2019

The horn button contact may not be at fault. Mechanical horns are a kind of oscillator and often have an adjustment screw held in place with a nut to secure it.\015\012This screw is actually connected to ground and is one half of a contact set inside.\015\012The contacts are normally closed (contacting) and when power is applied to the insulated terminal via the horn button or a relay controlled by it, the adjustable contact is interrupted by magnetic pull inside.\015\012Once open, the magnetic field is gone and the contact closes again restarting the cycle.\015\012
\015\012That adjustable contact burns away with time and it then needs adjustment.\015\012Loosen the nut a little, have someone press the horn button while you adjust the screw; maybe ear plugs would be a good idea.\015\012The amount of necessary adjustment will be very small and you are likely to hear squawks and squeals and may have to loosen the nut and readjust several times before it sounds normal again.\015\012If you live in town, expect to see a neighbor or two glaring at you or just take a drive out of town.
