Having problems with your 1997 Ford Explorer AWD ?

I know my engine gets hot when I'm driving it but it does not register on dial on the dashboard and my heat doesn't get very warm. Does that mean the thrmostat is bad.

Check to see if the wire going to the temp sending unit is pluged in. It located in the area of the thermistat housing. If it is you need a test light to test it, Ground the test light and probe the wire connector at the sending unit while the key is on. If the needle at the gauge move, you need to replace temp sender.
Yes that is probably the cause.your thermostat is probably stuck open
