If you have a look in your owners manual it says the engine warning light is linked to the exhaust system. i've talked to a couple of mechanics and they reckon its the oxy sensor. i tend to agree with this as nothing else unusual has happened with my car when this was happening and it was under fueling at the time.
\015\012it could also be a short as a couple of times when it happened, while on the move i killed the engine and re-started it and it didn't reappear. after using a bit of injector cleaner and a good service it hasn't happened since.
\015\012i wasn't able to get it plugged into a computer because it never stayed on after turning the ignition off.
There are alot of things it could be. Faulty sensors or valves. For the most part though, when it is low on oil or water. There are no warning lights. Oil pressure warning lights and heat gauges for water. No lights for being low on those things. Take it to the dealer is the best bet and they will plug it into a scanner that will tell why the Check engine light is coming on. Hope it helps!
