Having problems with your 1997 Jeep Wrangler ?

Starting/Alternator Gauge problems

\015 Hi ...\015\012\015\012I have a 1997 Wrangler 4cyl and I have had a bit of a history of weirdness.\302\240\015\012\015\012Three months or so ago, alternator failed after a couple of epidsodes of gauge dropping to the left completely ...\302\240\015\012\015\012Not too long after the alternator was replaced, for a while, the alternator guage would pin to the right (returning to normal if I was at a stop light for a minute, and then push right back up a few seconds after I started rolling again). This happened intermittently for few days over a week or so.\302\240\015\012\015\012And not always in this days, but once in a while when I tried to start it I'd get the low battery clicking sound and not start. However in a couple of tries I could usually coax it to start ...\302\240\015\012\015\012That stopped for a long time and then yesterday the meter started pinning to the right again ...and now it won't start at all ... clicks sometimes and not others ...\015\012\015\012The battery powers wipers and such like it has a good charge and the Jeep starts eagerly and easily with a small rolling jump start and runs well ... haven't tried a battery-to-battery jump, but it didn't work the last time this happened.\015\012\015\012Tell me if I am eliminating problems too quickly, but if we set aside the seemingly good battery and relatively new alternator, what kind of things should I be considering?\015\012\015\012Thanks\015\012Lou\302\240\015\012\015\012\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 14-01-2019

Answers :

It maybe as simple as corroded battery terminals. Somtimes they corrode between the post and the terminal itself. When you run light loads there is enough current passing through. When you crank the engine however, the large current flow will not pass. When you jump the car the clamps are biting on the outside of the terminal and current flows easy. Simply clean or replace the terminals and clean the posts as well to a silver shine and the trouble may go away
