Having problems with your 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 ?

It sounds like you either have a bad valve seal, or your piston rings are not sealing. You'll have to take it somewhere to have the issue diagnosed as it can't be done online.

However the Catalytic converter problem is due to the engine burning oil. The oil clogs the Cat as it passes through the exhaust. So it will need to be replaced after you fix the oil burning issue. Most likely your Oxygen sensor will need to be replaced as well due to the same issue.
