My 1997 toyota avalon overheated. How do I tell if I need a thermostat or water pump?

IF YOU PULL OF THE RAD CAP AND START THE ENGINE YOU SHOULD SEE THE WATER CIRCULATE PAST THE CAP OPENING IF THE ENGINE OVER HEATS WHILE THE CAP IS OFF THE STAT WOULD BE MY FIRST CHOICE BUT WITH TOYOTAS YOUR RITE THERE AT THE WATER PUMP ALSO SO BOTH WOULD BE A SAFE BET
