97 CAMRY TAIL LIGHTS PROBLEM
\015 FIRST TIME I FOUND OUT MY TAIL LIGHTS WAS NOT WORKING I CHECKED MY FUSES. I REPLACED IT BECAUSE I HAD A BLOWN FUSE. ACOUPLE TIMES IT KEPT BLOWING OUT MY FUSES. NOW....... WITH A GOOD FUSE, MY TAIL LIGHTS ARE STILL NOT WORKING. SO I CHECKED MY LIGHT BULBS. INFACT I BOUGHT NEW ONES FOR IT.I HAVE A GOOD FUSE. I HAVE NEW LIGHT BULBS. BUT I DON'T KNOW WHY MY TAIL LIGHTS ARE NOT ON. I'M GUESSING IT MIGHT BE A SHORTAGE IN THE WIRINGS?\015
You are right you do have a short, but it's easy to fix at the same time it is expensive. In your trunk area you will find a bulb out relay it can be either in the right corner or left corner panel in the trunk area,if not there if may be under the rear deck of the trunk(under the rear window inside the trunk) It might be yellow brown or green. One fron the junk yard will work just as good as a new one.If you are skillful you can open it and solder the burned circuit, but you have to know what you are doing. You also neet to find out if you had a bad bulb that shorted so you can rest knowing that what caused it to burn out in the frist place is fixed.
This isn't a complete answer to this problem, but I thought others might benefit from just knowing how to replace the lights on the license plate. Just remove the 2 screws holding the lenses (there are two of them). You will probably already read some of the instructions posted on the web telling you to unscrew the harness from inside the trunk...do not do this for the 97. All you have to do is unscrew the lenses, they will probably not just drop out so use something to gently pry them out (I used a paint can opener). Once the lenses are off the bulbs pull straight out. Don't turn them, don't twist them, don't push them in, just pull them straight out. If they stick, it's probably due to corrosion. Be very careful that you don't squeeze too hard and break the bulb. If they won't come out use a lubricant that promotes breaking down corrosion like Liquid Wrench or even WD40.
