Could be many things. Low coolant, cooling fans not functioning, a blockage in the system, worn or broken impeller on water pump, bad thermostat. Also the Cadillac northstar engine is notorious for head gasket failure. This can cause overheating. If you have little or no car repair experience it might be best to take the car to a reputable garage to be diagnosed.
Many things can cause over heating. When its hot check to see if the hoses are collapsing. An old radiator cap can also cause over heating. Varify if the fans are coming one. One will come on when the vehicle hits about 195 to 210 degrees. The other will be on as soon as the ac is turned on. You can also have a water pump not working. Those are the most common reasons for a vehcile to over heat.
