Having problems with your 1998 Chevrolet K1500 ?
1998 chevy express van electrical problem
\015 When driving the volt meter would drop down to 12.5 volts the light's would dim and then it would go back to 14. Then a few miles down the road it would do the same thing over and over. A dealer installed a new alternator and it has a good battery. On my way back home it did the same thing I took it back and they checked it out and every thing was good. When I got back to my driveway I put in reverse and the voltage dropped to 11.3 and the battery light came on. It did the same thing in drive but only dropped to 12.5. I had the backup light's unpluged when I did this. I drove it 20mi and it worked perfect like it should. I have to drive from Florida to PA and I'm afraid to trust it. \015\012Any help would be appreciated.\015
Try checking the cables on your battery to make sure there not lose or corroded, a lose connection from the battery could cause this problem, if there's any corrosion it will look like white fluffy deposits, if so clean them off with a wire brush or a battery terminal cleaner. you can perform a basic test on your battery by using an ohm meter, with the vehicle off the battery should read about 12.4 volts, with the vehicle started the battery should read above 12.4 volts, usually around 14 volts, also try checking the drive belt for loseness and wear, if it does'nt have enough tension it could be slipping on the alternator pulley,
Put a new back up light switch in it and be done with it.
