Having problems with your 1998 Ford Explorer ?

I had my 98 ford explorer in 4wd low and when i was shifting out of 4 x 4 mode there was a huge clunk, then it seems that the transfer case or transmission will not let it go back to automatic drive it is stuck in lower gears, and, the o d off light and the 4high and the 4low lights keep flashing in the instrument cluster whille the truck is going. whats up?

Answers :

98's do not have hubs. Sounds like the transfer case motor did not complete it's job. These motor have problems with brushes sticking if they are not cycled periodically.
Try replacing your hubs they could be slipping
