The 4.6/5.4 motors are bad about blown head gaskets. Check the oil and make sure it is not turning milky. Do a compression check, if all is ok, then remove the radiator cap, and make sure there is coolant flowing while engine is running (still cold ofcourse). If it is not flowing, water pump could be bad, or the radiator could be clogged up. Put cap back on, and let idle until it's up to running temp. The cooling fan should turn on. If it doesn't then you either have a bad fan or fan relay. If it does, and begins to over heat, your thermostat is probably stuck closed.
