Having problems with your 1998 Mercury Sable ?

Clacking noise at idle, no compression in one cylinder. Car was running fine at highway speed. Lost power and check engine began blinking. We drove it home (70 miles). The oil looks OK, no water or obious debris. I am thinking the problem must be in the valve train. Are there any known issues with the V6 24 valve system that cauld cause this? I don't think the piston is bad as it does not appear to be burning any oil. Mechanic says "take it to the junk yard".
