Having problems with your 1999 BMW 318 ti ?

The battery light on my 2000 316i (1895cc)stays on. The manual suggests it's an alternator problem but the car was driven with the lights on with no loss of power. I have had issues before with corroded sensors warning me of non-existent problems. The weather has been extremely cold here recently and I've heard that can affect battery performance is this true?

I actually have seen this before with the battery light on. At my dealership we ended up doing the same repair with an alternator first and then a battery and the light stayed on. What we ended up with was an internal problem with the instrument cluster so it was turning the battery light on when it should not. You could try to do an extended battery reset by disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 1 hour and then retry. You could remove the instrument cluster and disconnect the connector to the cluster (small torx screws hold the cluster in place) and see if this will reset the light.

If these do not work then it will be time to try the dealer unfortunately. At the dealer we can install a cluster to test the system and make sure the battery light is then off. If so then it needs to be programmed and coded to your vehicle (1 hour charge) for it to work. This unit is "married" to the vehicle and is not interchangeable with another vehicle or it sets a manipulation dot that shows the mileage had been tampered with.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.
