Could be a number of issues. like crankshaft position sensors, mass air-flow....but i like to look at the central problem first...the ECU
\015\012the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36
\015\012you gain acess to it under the hood....
\015\012this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
\015\012the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.
\015\012remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
\015\012board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.
\015\012you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.
\015\012this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
\015\012car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
\015\012all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
\015\012I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
\015\012one out.
\015\012BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
\015\012of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.
