Having problems with your 1999 Chevrolet Astro ?

The gas gauge is erratic. It bounces from full to mid way to empty. Especially when it is low on fuel, but not only. On a full tank, it works fine until the tank is about half empty, then erratic.

Answers :

Sounding like the sending unit in the tank. I think they only come with the pump as a unit and are very pricey. Its a variable resistor with a little float attached to it. They can wear.
This is a failure off the tank sensor .The potentiometer with the float on the tank would have resulted in wearing OFF and so when it comes to the half part there is not connection of the resistance coil to the potentiometer resulting in this erratic action.
\012So change the float chamber assembly on the fuel tank. Make sure that all connections are tight.
