Having problems with your 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier ?

I just replaced the alternator (used) on my 1999 cavalier. Now the strater is stuck "on" and I had to disconnect the neg battery terminal. What is causing this and how can I fix it??? Anyone herad of this before? I had to jump start it to get it going again.

Answers :

You need t iocheck and see if you have the alt. connected properly if yo umix up the battery side with the Zenner diode that could cause the starter to be "on" permanently.

Also if you installed the Alt. with the battery still connected you could have fouled up the starter relay, if that welded itself to the 'on' position then that could also cause a continuous starter.

In either case you should be looking for a continuous 'on' signal from the battery or the stater. A simple continuity test would eliminate a few possibilities and simplify the problem, here is where i would start;
* All connections for your test light should be on the battery positive*
1.test from the starter relay to the starter. (ignition on/ light, ignition off /no light)
2. alt. to starter. (light on)
3. ignition to starter relay (no light)

Any of these test conditions are wrong then you need to isolate where the short is, and repair it as needed.
