Having problems with your 1999 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup ?

The gas guage does not work on my '97 S10 pickup (it shows about 3/4 tank.) Is this something I can fix myself ? If so, what parts do I need and what will it cost, approx? If NOT, how much will it cost to get it repaired in an auto repair shop? Thanks! Michelle

The most commen problem with gm fuel gauges is the sending unit located in your fuel tank. You would have to purchase a new sending unit and drop your fuel tank to replace it. As far as how much it would cost to get repaired that varies but it could cost as much as $500 or more because sometimes you have to buy the whole fuel module assy (fuel pump & sending unit together) plus there's a couple hours of labor to replace. The best thing to do is get estimates from local repair shops if you can't do the work yourself and ask friends and family which shop they might recommend. Hope that helps.
The level sensor in the tank has gone bad. You can buy a fuel sending unit for about $100 (you used to have to replaced the whole tanks for hundreds of dollars, but they had so many issues they started selling the sensors on their own).
\015\012You can fix it on your own, but you're going to want the tank to be pretty much empty before hand.
