Having problems with your 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD ?

99 dodge ram diesel will not start.

\015 While driving on the interstate, dodge shut down. The motor was running, but had no acceleration, drifted off to the side of road, motor shut down. Motor turns over great, but will not start. While loading on flatbead, noticed rear brake line rupture, sprayed fluid around gas tank. (not entirely sure if leaking brake fluid sprayed on electrical connection?) didn't look as though there was any brake fluid near there. Anyhow, changed fuel filter, tried to start with no luck.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 26-07-2021

This definitely sounds like the fuel injector pump may have failed. These 1999 Cummins engines have a small fuel transfer or "lift" pump that is between the fuel tank and the fuel filter.... mounted below the fuel filter canister near the firewall of the truck.
\015\012If your transfer pump will not fill the fuel filter canister up after replacing the fuel filter then it is for sure weak. I replaced one about 4 years ago on my 1999 and I think it was $150 or $200 and was not hard for a person with medium mechanic skills to do. There are numerous websites dedicated to Cummins Turbo Diesel enthusasist and I sure you can find HOW TO articles for doing this.
\015\012A weak transfer pump will lead to a DEAD injector pump. When I had a diesel mechanic replace my fuel injector pump 4 years ago I paid around $1500 including labor. I know people who install these at home but you need a few specialty tools and the knowledge to get the pump timed correctly.... it was worth the $250 labor I paid to have a professional do it... This guy could do it with his eyes closed and it still took him several hours.
\015\012You may be able to replace your transfer pump and your truck will being to run, but I would be aware of the injector pump. They will fail with NO notice, it sounds like yours may have already done this. After spending nearly $2,000 fixing my old truck I installed a fuel pressure gage at the fuel filter. If the pressure went below 5psi I knew the transfer pump was getting weak and it was time to spend that $200 in "injector pump insurance"
\015\012e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any more questions or want to discuss this problem some more. I have personally owned 7 Dodge Ram trucks with the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine.
\015\012The forums at www.dieseltruckresource.com have a huge knowledge base about these trucks and engines.
It sounds like you need to drain your water/fuel seperator....It is very easy to do....If this was previously done let me know so I can further diagnose....
