Fords are common for this. You can try to replace the choke, spark plugs, and air filter. Clean the carburetor (You can pour transmission fluid in the carburetor to clean it. This will loosen you valves and clean the carburetor. This will cause it to smoke, but it will not last long.) and put fuel cleaner in the gas. Change the fuel filter. In other words do a good tune up. Try NGK spark plugs. Carbureto might also need adjusting.
"Idle air control valve" is sticking. Mine did it too. Replace it or take it off and clean it. Also, a good whack with the plastic handle of a screwdriver will unstick it. Carbon builds up and makes it stick. Mine has went 100K without sticking after whacking it with a screwdriver.
