It sounds like you need to figure out if there was a light on and it ran down the battery, or if there is a more serious problem. If you don't have any other way to check the battery you might short out the two large terminals on the solenoid to see if the engine turns over. It will spark, so don't burn yourself. If you are afraid to short them out, you could disconnect the battery cable from the solenoid and touch the end of it to the other large terminal on the solenoid, which has the starter cable attached. The function of the solenoid is to connect those two cables.
