Try this, turn the key on, and then crawl under the vehicle at the fuel tank, listen for a mechanical buzz, or whir, any noise really. If you hear nothing, then unhook the fuel filter, and use a gallon gas can, put the hose down in it, and have someone turn the key on for a moment. If no fuel comes fromt the hose, then your fuel pump is bad, and needs to be replaced. Typically running a vehicle "low" on fuel will not harm a fuel pump. Running it out, can burn it up.
One note on banging on the bottom of the gas tank. This does sometimes work, but, if you get the vehicle started doing that, drive it to the nearest shop, and have the pump replaced. It means the motor on the pump is stopped at a flat spot, and you eventually won't get it to start again. The pounding on the tank is also a solution for vapor lock, which is very uncommon on todays cars....
If its petrol engine bang bottom of fuel tank while some one else cranks vehicle over if it starts good just pump jammed if it dont buzz to life and you cant hear fuel pump buzzing ceck for power to it if thats there replace pump. running out of fuel kills electric fuel pumps internally in petrol tanks.
