The torque converter is controlled by a computer. When the service engine light comes on a code is set that could be disabling the the torque converter until the problem is gone. I would recommend scanning to see what code was set and doing further diagnosis before replacing any parts. There is a solenoid in the transmission under the side cover. It's a lot of labor to get to.
Is this an automatic or manual (5 speed)? The part you are referring to is called a crank shaft sensor. The torque converter doesn not have a switch. It is internal in the tranny between the engine and the front part of the tranny.
\015\012I suggest replacing the crank shaft sensor and the cam shaft sensor. I am not sure where these are located on this vehicle - however, I have found them in most cases just behind the harmonic balancer. Be aware however that some engines were designed with internal sensors and may require the work of a mechanic to repair this.
\015\012I first suggest taking the car to a mechanic (or auto parts dealer) and have a diagnostics test performed as this will determine more accurately what the problem is, or could be.
\015\012Please let me know if you need further assistance.
