Check the motor mounts. It is possible that you are hearing the engine hit the firewall. You need yourself and one other person to perform a test. With the hood open start the engine. Put the emergency brake on and have one person stand on either side of the engine. The other person in the driver seat hold the brake pedal down hard with your left foot, put the car in gear (drive, then reverse) and rev the motor a few times. The person out side the car should look for the engine moving when the engine rpm increase.
